December 16, 2009
Shortly before 9 am this morning Engine 811 was alerted for a multi-vehicle accident with a car on fire and a person trapped on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway (Route 495) between Baltimore Avenue (Route 1) and Interstate 95 in College Park.
Engine 811 arrived first due and reported a three vehicle accident with a Jeep well involved with fire.
The collision caused significant damage to the rear of the Jeep, rupturing the vehicle's fuel tank and causing the fire.
The driver of the Jeep was dazed and unable to get out of the vehicle due to her foot being stuck underneath the gas/brake pedal and the vehicle doors could not be opened as a result of the crash damage.
Several people who were driving by noticed the accident and fire and jumped in action stated Mark Brady, Public Information Officer for PG Fire.
As one of the workers attempted to put out the fire with a fire with a fire extinguisher a second worker attempted to open the driver's door to pull the woman out of the burning car but was unable, so the worker then jumped on the canvas roof of the jeep and was able to pull the woman to safety as she was screaming for help.
The driver of the jeep was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
