Engine 811 Responds to House Fire with Heavy Fire Showing

By Firefighter/EMT Spiro Dimakas
December 7, 2009

At 23:04hrs the box was struck for a house fire in the 7000blk of Partridge Pl in Co. 801's first due. Engine 811 responded as the 4th due engine with 6 personnel. Engine 812 arrived 1st on the scene with heavy fire from the front of a large 2 story house. Engine 811 was the 3rd arriving Engine and laid out 900' of 4" LDH to initiate a secondary water supply. Water supply issues stopped the initial engine crews from continuing an interior attack as both 500 gallon tanks of the 1st and 2nd due engines were depleted and Evacuation Tones followed.

Engine 811 was able to get enough pressure from the secondary supply to place into service a 400' 1" 3/4 attack line. After the go ahead from command Engine 811 advanced the line throughout the first floor extinguishing the bulk of the fire on that floor. As Engine 811 was continuing to advance towards the rear the evacuation tones were struck again and Engine 811's crew was forced to abandon an interior attack. While most of the fire on the first floor was knocked the second floor was still engulfed in flames. Engine 811's crew continued to operate on the fireground working with other companies to extinguish the stubborn fire. Engine 811 operated on the scene until 02:02hrs after assisting with extinguishing the fire, overhaul, and racking up.

It took over 80 firefighters and almost 2 alarms worth of fire apparatus to extinguish the fire. Units had the fire under control after about an hour of operations. On a side note multiple firefighters were injured on the fireground with various injuries however none serious, we wish all those injured a fast recovery.
